Revealed Photographic Group
Background
In 2009, I initiated a highly adventurous visual arts project entitled: Revealed. This work was financed by the Scottish Arts Council Disability Arts Fund and undertaken in association with Stills Photographic Centre, Edinburgh.
The aim of the project was two-fold. Firstly, to introduce and train other visually disabled people in digital photographic techniques and secondly, to provide a valuable learning experience for the mainstream artists who supported the group.
The project culminated in a very successful exhibition of images created by the visually disabled participants – visit: http://www.stills.org/current-group. The exhibition also faithfully replicated my visual art accessible interpretation model in that the photographs were, in turn, accompanied by tactile interpretations, created by Camilla Adams, as well as sound recordings, created by Rachel O’Connor and Jules Rawlinson, which made the exhibition accessible to all audiences.
The original visually disabled members of Revealed: Sarah Caltieri, Andreas Gartner, Anne Henderson, Robin Marshall, Fiona Powell and Rita Simpson, were so inspired by the project that I was persuaded, later in the year, to establish the Revealed Photographic Group as an ongoing and independent artistic enterprise.
Today, the RPG is attracting not only more visually disabled photographers but also an ever-expanding number of non-disabled artists who assist us in our work.
Current Activities
We are planning a new collection of images that we will be exhibiting later in 2010. We are also building our own Revealed website where more of the Group’s photography will be displayed and which will be launched in the near future.
Finally, the RPG provides presentations and workshops for mainstream arts organisations that are interested to learn more about the techniques and support requirements of visually disabled photographers.
